A cover letter is a document typically sent with your resume that provides additional information on your experience and why you are qualified for the job you are applying for.

A cover letter is another chance to make a good first impression on an employer so you don’t want to simply repeat what’s on your resume. Instead, include specific information on why you’re a strong candidate for the role.

Your cover letter should be tailored to the company and role you’re applying for. Even if the company says a cover letter is optional, you may want to include one anyway since employers use both resumes and cover letters as a way to screen applicants to determine which candidates they want to interview.

Cover Letter Tips 

  • A cover letter should tell your story and it should not be a regurgitation of your resume (See sample Cover Letter template)

  • Companies know when you’re using a template, you need to find specific things about the company that you are passionate about and integrate them into your cover letter

  • Talk about specific things that attracted you to the company. Did this company just launch a special initiative that you are very passionate about? Did you read some news on the company that you are excited to learn more about?
