A quick deep dive into the day-to-day job.

Tell us about yourself and your job.

I'm a UX Content Designer at Facebook where I write and test UI copy for creation experiences, including end-to-end flows, naming, and product education. This involves collaborating closely with product managers, designers, researchers, data scientists, and engineers on product strategy and development.

How did you end up in your field? What do you like about it?

I've always enjoyed writing and design and was thrilled to find a field where I can blend the two. It's been really exciting to see the field growing and more companies valuing the impact of content design as a core aspect of product design.

What does a typical day look like on the job?

Every day looks different, but I spend most of my time in meetings that range from working on early-stage designs, crafting product vision, and giving/seeking feedback within our content design community. I also mentor other content designers and work on educational initiatives for data-driven design.

What types of projects and meetings are you involved in?

I support multiple teams and work on projects within each. Since there aren't enough content designers to cover everything, we have to practice compassionate prioritization to make sure we're working on the highest impact projects.

Who do you collaborate with within meetings and projects?

I partner closely with product managers, designers, researchers, data scientists, product marketing, and engineers on product strategy and development. I also work with other content designers on my team and attend design critiques to share work and give/seek feedback.

What's the most challenging thing about your job?

Balancing meetings and focus time! Context switching all the time can be tough so it's important to carve out time for thinking and designing.

What are some characteristics that can help someone succeed in your role?

Being collaborative, open to feedback, and inquisitive are all helpful qualities to have. Similar to product designers, the role of content designers goes beyond simply writing strings – sharing work, asking product questions, and bringing stakeholders along to support your content recommendations are equally important as well. Clear communication is key.

Any advice on how to stand out and get hired for those just starting off?

Understanding the design and product development processes is a major advantage.

What's something that surprised you about your job?

Designing for a global audience is powerful. I've learned so much about building empathy for users across the world and writing for different languages to ensure that our experiences resonate.

Any last thoughts, advice, or recommendations for someone who wants to do what you do?

I think everything is covered above!
